Is Savani The Most Insecure and Suffering Estate in Kitui?

Savani Estate within Kitui township is well known. It was once the gem where every prospective land buyer wanted to invest in. Serene environment and spacious lands.

But now the Estate is losing its allure. Crooks, thugs and burglars have made the estate their playground. The residents of Savani Estate know no peace.

The thieves, who are reported to be armed with machetes, toy guns and other crude weapons strike at night when everybody is asleep. They go for valuables at home compounds. These could be chairs left out at night, chicken and anything of value.

But lately, the thieves who operate in a well organized gang have upped their game. They are now targeting private cars. They scale walls at night to access the compounds where vehicles are parked.

While inside and armed with hacksaws, sledge hammers and other weapons, they knock off car windows and get in. They then vandalize the car, carry away batteries, headlights and side mirrors and other parts.

The ingenious crooks have a way of disabling car alarms.

“They broke into my car at night and carted away the headlights, side mirrors and the jack. I reported the matter” said the latest victim of the well organized crime, a daktari working at a local hospital. Hers was a Toyota Fielder car, it is now grounded.

“I woke up to find my car grossly vandalized. They stole the battery worthy Sh12,000 and the spare wheel” complained another victim. The car is also grounded.

“Not long ago, they struck at my place and stole some 10 jogoos that I rear in my compound . I was forced to sell the rest of the chicken” lamented yet another victim.

And the cries go on and on and on. The disillusioned residents of Savani Estate want the police to enhance patrols within their estate before it becomes completely inhabitable.

They are also thinking of forming a vigilante group to help the police in their work - hunt down the crooks and kill them, if that will give them a peace of mind.

“Imagine now I am forced to leave my car in town parked within Bank premises for security reasons. It is sad” said another lady resident.

All the victims confirmed that they have reported the crimes at Kitui Central police station and they have corresponding OB Numbers. They hope the police will deal with the wave of crime as is expected of them.
