Why Kibwana Is Running As Makueni Senator

Prof Kibwana

Today, we can authoritatively report that the decision by Makueni governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana to run for a Senate position when his term expires is driven by the people's push to have him remain at the county and protect devolution.

Our desk has confirmed that Kibwana who is hailed as the doyen of devolution and development has been forced by the people of Makueni to shelve his presidential ambitions and gun for the county's Senate seat.

A source who is an opinion leader and a member of Makueni Peoples' Development Committees revealed that for many months, the Makueni electorate has been piling pressure on Kibwana to consider running for the seat as a way of protecting devolution in the county as well as continuity of his stellar development record.

"It is we the people who have convinced our governor to abandon his presidential ambition so as to serve us as Senator. We are happy he has yielded to our demands" stated the source.

The Makueni People's Development Committees  are elaborate people driven development structures with over 400,000 persons participating directly in the county's development.

On Thursday last week during a leadership meeting held at ATC- Kwakathoka,  residents pleaded with the devolution chief not to desert the county at the hour of need.

"Some of the leaders vying for the gubernatorial position think it's their time to eat. Only Kibwana can defend devolution jealously in this county and beyond. We need him here, speaking for us. We have no doubt he will execute his mandate sufficiently well at the Senate," remarked one of the participants at Kwakathoka meeting.

Kibwana's decision to run for the senator's position has left the sitting senator Mutula Jnr in limbo as many believe that the professor of law will bag the seat with unmatched ease.

There are rumours that Mutula jnr might be going for the governor's position but some sources within his camp say he is not keen in that direction since he lacks solid grassroots networks unlike his competitors.
