Kibwana Endorsed To Run For Makueni Senatorial Seat

Senate here I come

Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana has today officially announced his bid to run for Makueni Senatorial seat.

Addressing a section of the county residents at ATC Kwa Kathoka while presiding over the deliberations for 2021/2022 Budgetary allocations, Kibwana said his latest decision was informed by desire to protect devolution.

The governor said he was responding to a relentless appeal by the county residents who had called on him to run for the Senate seat in order to protect the life changing development he had initiated in the county for two terms as the county governor.

"You have asked me if I can run for the senator's seat. That's a good question, and the way I see it, that is work I can do," Kibwana said.

"Because you have requested me to become your Senator, I want to say I am fit for that job. I will work towards promoting and safeguarding devolution in our county," the governor added.

In the recent months, his supporters mainly lobby groups such as the the county development committees, the clergy, women caucuses, the youth and others have been piling pressure on the governor to run for the Senate seat after his term as governor expires.

Kibwana's declaration for the Senate seat comes few weeks after he, together with governors Charity Ngilu (Kitui) and Alfred Mutua (Machakos) endorsed the presidential candidature of ODM leader Raila Odinga under Azimio la Umoja movement.

Kibwana who is the leader of Muungano party will contest the seat on his party which is under the Azimio movement and backs Raila's presidential quest together with Ngilu's Narc and Mutua's Maendeleo Chap Chap.

He said as the county Senator he will ensure prudent and transparent use of county resources while ensuring funds are utilized for public good.

And Kibwana's declaration seems to have buried Daniel Maanzo's chances of ever becoming the county Senator, with majority of the county residents dismissing the outgoing Makueni MP as colourless and lacking in vision and development agenda.

"Maanzo's goose is now cooked. Kibwana who enjoys massive support across the entire county will make him minced meat. If he knows what's good for him, he can try an MCA seat," said Joseph Mukiti who belongs to Kitise development committee.

You have our blessings, Makueni residents tell Kibwana
