Why Kalonzo Might Shelve Kitui Governor's Nomination

Kalonzo Musyoka

By now, it is evidentiary clear that Kiema Kilonzo is awfully unpopular among Kitui voters. There is nothing Kiema will do to have his doomed bid gather speed. It is dead on water.

All opinion polls, starting with the scientific poll conducted by the Wiper party, plus dozens of others conducted online, show Dr. Julius Malombe leading with a wide margin (upwards of 60 percent) against Kiema's pitiable performance (constantly below 10 percent).

Kiema can't defeat anybody

Kiema's dismal performance is also telling; because one would imagine that his selling point - that he has Kalonzo's son as his deputy - would have gained him popularity. With a below 10 percent popularity across all corners of Kitui, it is clear that Kiema Kilonzo and his running mate are unpopular, and will remain so until the day of the voting.

Clearly, it will be a thunderous defeat for them. Expect no miracles.

This is the more reason why the Wiper party should not force a meaningless nomination process between Dr. Malombe and Kiema Kilonzo. It is pointless & a waste of time

The unpopular Kiema foolishly brags in the villages that he cannot lose in the nominations because he has Kalonzo's son by his side. Kiema and his ilk must learn that the Wiper party belongs to its members - it is not a private entity.

Our Desk is aware that Kiema Kilonzo is planning to use extreme violence during the nomination process, if it gets to that point. He has already invested in violence to scuttle the exercise and ensure it is not free, fair and transparent. He thinks this way, he will have an upper hand.

Other underhand dealings also come into play; for instance, the party's Elections Board placed an advert calling for applications from people interested in conducting the nominations.

The call was placed on Sunday and quickly closed on Monday. But Kiema is boasting that he had prior knowledge of that advert and moved ahead of everybody else to plant his people. This smacks of high mischief and Kalonzo must move with speed to restore confidence in the party.

Kalonzo should not allow the unpopular and thuggish Kiema walk him down the tragic path of breaking the party. He is fired up by greed and not a passion to serve.

Indeed Kiema Kilonzo has no manifesto for the people of Kitui. He has no plan to develop the county. He launched his doomed bid at his home and barely attracted 300 people. Kiema has no following. He has no an iota of clue what Kitui needs.

Kiema's manifesto & plan & support is Kevin Muasya! His candidature starts and ends with Kevin Muasya!

*But Kitui populace and Wiper leadership must remain alive to these facts*:

1. Dr. Malombe has remained fiercely loyal to the party. Kiema Kilonzo, just like David Musila, ditched the party at some point and went around the country insulting and demeaning Kalonzo. Is he now clean simply because he has Kalonzo's son by his side?

2. All pollsters have shown Dr. Malombe in an unassailable lead. Kiema is no competitor at all to Dr. Malombe. This is a clear pointer that even in the unlikely event that Kiema gets the ticket through unorthodox means, he and his running mate will still lose badly in the general election. Kalonzo should avert a scenario where his party loses alongside his son, thus denting his national image.

3. Kitui voters are not fools. In this election, they know what they want. You can sniff it in the air out there. Malombe's wave is all over. His support is solid. Wiper party knows this only too well. The onus is on them to make the right decision.

The people have firmly decided; it is Malombe for Wiper.
