The zoning agreement within the Azimio - One Kenya coalition to prevail on weak candidates to drop out of the race in favour of strong candidates has now hit home.

Here in Kitui county, former senator David Mailu Musila who is running for the gubernatorial position on a Jubilee Party ticket is the casualty of these negotiations meant to boost Azimio - One Kenya numbers.

A letter from the Jubilee Party (JP) addressed to Musila and which has been availed to the Skymoon Desk in confidence indicates that the party has announced its decision to withdraw its interest in Kitui governor's race, leaving the stage for the most popular party in Ukambani; Wiper.

The letter dated 22nd June 2022 and signed by the party's Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and addressed to David Musila reads in part;

Dear Hon. David Musila.

Kindly note, in light of negotiations between the party leaders for Jubilee party, Wiper party and ODM party which form part of the Azimio - One Kenya coalition, it has been decided that Jubilee Party withdraws its interest in Kitui's governor's seat. Evidently, Jubilee is not a popular party in Ukambani, and particularly Kitui county thus it is in our best interest to zone the region for the popular party; Wiper. For avoidance of any doubt, kindly note that henceforth and through to the election date, Jubilee Party considers the Wiper candidate as the sole candidate for our Coalition in Kitui County. The decision has been reached in utmost good faith to give our presidential candidate Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga a good chance to win with majority coalition seats...." the letter reads partly.

The letter goes on to say that the decision to pull Jubilee party out of the race was also pegged on the popularity and acceptance of the candidates among Kitui voters, where varied opinion polls have shown Wiper's Dr. Julius Malombe scoring highly against Musila.

The Secretary General further requests Musila to consider withdrawing his candidature for the common good of Azimio - One Kenya, with the letter noting that a further communication will be done to the former Senator on what other role(s) will be assigned to him within the coalition.

This therefore means that Jubilee party will not invest in Kitui Gubernatorial race and also explains why two weeks ago, Raila Odinga in the company of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka roundly endorsed Dr. Malombe as the sole Azimio - One Kenya alliance candidate for Kitui county race.

Should Musila heed his party's directive on zoning and drop his unpopular bid, the Azimio - One Kenya Coalition candidate Dr. Malombe will face it out with Kenya Kwanza candidate Jonathan Mueke who is running on a UDA party ticket during the August 9 polls.
