The much awaited Gatoroni Dispensary in Tharaka Ward is now operational, courtesy of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe's efforts to take quality healthcare services closer to the people.
Fully operational since September 2025, Gatoroni Dispensary offers critical outpatient services alongside comprehensive maternity care.
Speaking while commissioning the facility, Governor Malombe stated that the presence of a functional maternity unit at the far flung region will significantly improve maternal and child health outcomes. It will also reduce emergency referrals and complications associated with delayed treatment, the county boss added.
For decades, residents of Tharaka Ward endured the pain of accessing basic healthcare services.
For many residents, the newly commissioned facility is more than a building; it is a long-awaited solution to a daily challenge that forced the residents to travel over 15 kilometres in search of treatment.
For years, Tharaka Ward residents relied on distant facilities such as Ciampiu, Tseikuru and Katse dispensaries. The long distance journeys were not only costly but risky, especially for expectant mothers, children and the elderly.
Today, Governor Malombe has lifted that burden. Expectant mothers will now have an opportunity to deliver safely, closer home and children will access timely immunization and treatment.
"True leadership must respond directly to the needs of wananchi. My administration's commitment is to strengthen grassroots health systems across the County," said Governor Malombe, flanked by local leaders and County Government officers.
The Governor also commissioned key community projects in partnership with Compassion International Kenya, including the Gategi Farmers Marketing Cooperative Society to boost farmers’ incomes and the Church of God Kamayagi Water Project to enhance access to clean water.
He later toured Great Tana Campus of Tharaka University.
