Farmers across Kitui County turned up in large numbers as the County Government rolled out its subsidized livestock vaccination campaign.
The vaccination drive is aimed at safeguarding farmer incomes and protecting the livestock sector from costly diseases such as Foot and Mouth disease.
The County minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, led a monitoring tour in Kitui West, Mwingi West, Kitui Rural and Kitui South sub-counties where Animal Health Assistants (AHAs) were at hand to offer vaccination to livestock and other domestic animals such as donkeys and dogs.

Cattle were vaccinated against Foot and Mouth disease with farmers paying only Ksh50 per cow. Donkeys were dewormed and jabbed while dogs were vaccinated against the deadly and dangerous rabies disease.
Dr. Kimwele underscored the heavy economic toll of Foot and Mouth disease, noting that the disease lowers livestock prices and compromises meat quality thus limiting farmers' access to lucrative markets.
"Prevention through vaccination is far cheaper than managing an outbreak. This vaccination drive is designed not only to prevent diseases but also to improve the quality of meat and strengthen the livestock value chain," Waziri Mbaya said.
The minister reaffirmed the County Government's commitment to sustained vaccination drives and farmer sensitization, while encouraging adoption of improved livestock management practices.
These, he said, include breed improvement and planting drought-tolerant pasture such as Mbeetwa grass to enhance productivity and resilience.
