Business Magnate Mutia Nzomo Remembered As Philanthropist, Peace Maker During 5th Anniversary

 

The late Joseph Mutia Nzomo, a reknown business magnate who built a business empire worthy hundreds of millions of shillings from a scratch was yesterday remembered in a colourful anniversary at his Ngiluni village home in Kitui Rural.

He was hailed as a selfless family man, and a philanthropist who helped the needy and contributed immensely to the church. He was also a peace maker per excellence, the small team of invited guests was told.

The commemoration service that was conducted by the ACK church brought together his immediate family, neighbours and friends.

The business mogul who left vast investments at the heart of Kitui town and the periphery started off as a chicken vendor, every week cycling his old Riley bicycle to Mbitini and Kisasi markets to purchase the birds which he sold at a profit.

It is from these humble beginnings that Mutia, a humble man managed – through sheer hard work and strong will – to build an envious business empire.

Those who interacted with the late Mutia said he was a strict time keeper and a highly disciplined man.

“If you had an appointment say at 8am and you arrived 10 minutes late, he would not listen to you…he would move on to attend to more important things” said a close relative who knew the patriarch well.

And if you were going on a safari together, you were better advised to present yourself at the agreed time early enough because a time conscious Mutia would rev up his car and drive off at the appointed time.

“He did not condone lateness and laziness. He was highly disciplined and organized and these are the traits that made him successful” added another relative. His neighbours said Mutia was always willing to help in genuine causes.

“He was the epitome of strength and resilience. He overcame the odds to give us a name” said his children. During the event, his wife Josephine got a chance to be entertained with songs by her children and grandchildren in an impromptu choir that co-opted youthful guests.

The businessman passed on in 2015 and is survived by his wife and five children; Agnes, Catherine, Jane, Kyalo and Wambua as well as a couple of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
