From Training to Smart Licences: Gov Malombe Transforms Boda Boda Sector

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has intensified efforts to professionalize the boda boda sector after 783 motorcycle riders from all the 40 wards received Smart Driving Licences.


The initiative to empower the bodaboda operators was done under a partnership between the County Government of Kitui and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).


Speaking during the issuance ceremony at KEFRI Grounds, Governor Malombe said the initiative is designed to promote road safety, improve professionalism and accountability among riders, and enhance their livelihoods.


He described the programme as a major step towards transforming the boda boda industry into a safer, well-organized and economically viable sector.


The Governor noted that while the boda boda industry remains one of the largest employers of young people, many operators are yet to acquire driving licences. 


Out of 13,909 registered boda boda riders in Kitui County, only 2,968 are licensed, the Governor revealed. This highlights the need for sustained training and licensing programmes, he added. 


The beneficiaries successfully completed comprehensive training on traffic laws, road safety, customer care, personal health, medical fitness and traffic compliance before earning the Smart Driving Licences.


Governor Malombe challenged the newly licensed riders to uphold discipline, integrity and professionalism.


"The licence is not just a legal requirement but a symbol of responsibility and public trust," Governor Malombe told the riders.

He urged them to shun reckless riding, overloading, alcohol and substance abuse, criminal activities and all forms of misconduct that endanger lives and tarnish the image of the sector.


The head of the County Government encouraged young people to take the boda boda business as a pathway to economic empowerment through prudent financial management, savings and investment.


Governor Malombe reaffirmed his administration's commitment to collaborating with NTSA and other stakeholders to expand training, licensing, road safety awareness and the formation of SACCOs to improve riders' welfare.


Earlier, Governor Malombe commissioned the newly installed smart traffic lights at the junction between Kitui–Kibwezi and Mbusyani Road. He said the project is a  major milestone in enhancing road safety, easing traffic flow and modernizing transport infrastructure within Kitui Municipality.

Healthcare at the Doorstep: Gatoroni Dispensary Rescues Tharaka Ward

Governor Malombe, Assembly Seal Pact to Prioritize 3 Sectors
