The County Government of Kitui under the stewardship of Governor Malombe is stepping up support for farmers.

The department of Agriculture and Livestock has distributed beehives and apiculture equipment to farmer groups in Kitui West and Mwingi West.

And the  goal is simple: Boost honey production. Increase incomes. Strengthen farmer groups.

When he visited the beekeepers, Agriculture and Livestock CECM Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele said the initiative will expand apiculture across the county.

"More hives. More honey. More money in farmers’ pockets" Mbaya said.

Beneficiary groups include Woni Witu, Umui wa Muthi, Food for the Hungry Kenya Initiatives and Maka Self Help Group in Kitui West.

In Mwingi West, Kyathani Bee Keepers and Mutui Museo Self Help Group also received support.

"The program targets organized groups ready to grow and scale honey production" Waziri Mbaya explained.

Robert Kavilondo, Vice Chair of Maka Self Help Group welcomed the support. He said the new hives will increase output and provide a steady source of income for members.

Present during the event to empower farmers was Chief Officer for Livestock and Apiculture Jonathan Kyambi and other county officials
