Kitui County Agriculture Minister, Dr. Mbaya Kimwele has announced the early onset of the long rains, according to meteorological reports.
Speaking to the press in his office, Waziri Mbaya encouraged farmers to take advantage of the rains and begin planting but with caution.
“This marks the onset of the long rains. I urge our farmers to plant drought-resistant crops such as cowpeas, millet, sorghum, among others,” he said.
He emphasized the need to prioritize crops that require minimal rainfall to cushion farmers against possible dry spells.
At the same time, the Agriculture Minister called on livestock farmers to utilize the ongoing vaccination drive to protect their animals against Foot and Mouth Disease and other infections.
“Farmers should also ensure their animals are regularly sprayed against ticks, which are known to spread livestock diseases,” he advised.
Dr. Kimwele further urged young people to venture into agriculture-related courses, noting that the sector holds immense opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.
He at the same time cautioned residents to remain alert for flash floods during this rainy season and warned motorists against attempting to drive through flooded rivers.
