The much-anticipated Kitui Governor’s Cup finals have been rescheduled from August to December 4–6, 2026, following delays in the availability of funds to facilitate the tournament.

The change has been necessitated by the fact that the Kitui County FY 2026/2027 budget is yet to be cleared by the Controller of Budget (CoB).

The county budget was submitted to the County Assembly on time, but the approval process took longer than anticipated, consequently affecting the release and availability of funds for the County Government activities.

"With finances currently unavailable to cater for the event, the county has found it necessary to push the finals forward to allow sufficient time for the required funds to be procured once the budget process is completed," said Phoebe Mutemi the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Sports, Culture and the Arts.

The new dates are also expected to provide an opportunity for school-going learners to participate in the Governor’s Cup, broadening the tournament and giving more young people an opportunity to showcase their sporting talent.

Waziri Mutemi regretted the inconvenience caused by the postponement and urged teams, players and other stakeholders to take note of the new dates and continue with their preparations ahead of the December finals.

The Kitui Governor’s Cup finals will now be held from December 4–6, 2026.
