Kitui's Governor's Cup Finals: Grand finale for Talent, Business & Community Pride

Kitui is gearing up for a thrilling three-day football extravaganza as the Kitui County Governor’s Cup Finals – First Edition take centre stage at Kitui Stadium from August 21 to 23, 2026.


The County Executive Committee Member for Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports and Social Services Phoebe Mutemi said a total of 16 teams — eight for men and eight for women, will battle it out during the finals.


The sporting event is being organized by the County Government in conjunction with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).


The Governor’s Cup began at the village level, with teams progressing through the ward and sub-county stages to earn their place in the now scheduled finals. 


The journey now culminates in what promises to be a spectacular showcase of football talent.


The winning men’s team will pocket KSh500,000, while the women’s champions will take home KSh300,000.


"This makes the competition not only a platform for sporting excellence but also a meaningful investment in youth talent," said Waziri Mutemi.


Beyond the football pitch, the tournament is expected to bring together thousands of fans from across Kitui and neighbouring counties.


This influx of visitors will provide a major boost to local businesses, with hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders and other service providers expected to benefit from the increased activity.


The Governor’s Cup is therefore more than just football. 


"It is about identifying, nurturing and developing talent among young people, giving emerging players an opportunity to showcase their abilities while creating a pathway for them to pursue football at higher levels," Mutemi added.
